Making a new structure is an art as well as science. The professionals involve in creating a new structure should feel like Lord Brahma creating a new life on the earth. Each structure should be unique and maintenance and repair free. Whenever it is felt that repair is unavoidable then he should become Good doctor. This chapter does not deal with the technical know-how of repair philosophy of any structures. Our aim is to awake the fellow engineers and society at large so that durable repairs are carried-out in actual practice for existing structures. Whenever a person is repairing a building he should always think that he is operating a human being. The aim should be that my operation should be successful. We are sure that this type of thinking will make a lot of difference in his working and in turn he and society both will be benefited. Here there is a chance for civil engineers to become a good doctor and not the quack. The following are the feeling which is expressed point-wise. Ø Repair specialist should compare the structure, which he is going to repair as diseased patient who has come to the doctor. Ø In case of structure, maintenance such as housekeeping, painting etc can be compared as doing exercise or yoga. As exercise and yoga helps the body fit and energetic to fight disease similarly maintenance helps the structure to fight the different weather conditions and environment. Ø Normally, there is a debate whether the supports are necessary or not during the repairs. Answer is yes. Because if the hands or legs are fractured then after and during the operation the hands or legs are supported so that for that particular period hands or legs is not stressed. Ø Always there is a debate for full repairs or patch repairs. Suppose if you have a cut on the hand then what do you do? Naturally go for bandage for the cut portion and not on the full hand. Another example is if you got burnt on the face then what do you do? Naturally go for plastic surgery of the face and not the full body. Please do not break the good portion of the building, as the society members want to do so but educate them. Ø Painting and waterproofing should be treated as the clothes of the Human body. So depending on the economy, environment and longevity the above system should be chosen. As both increase protection to the structure. Ø Quality of Method to be adopted for repairs is like the medicine prescribed by the quake or MBBS or M.D. And here also it will depend on the patients spending capacity. Ø As we go for regular check up once in 3 years it is recommended that we should go for a regular check-up for once in three years. This will help us to take any corrective action, if needed. Ø Lot of Repair specialists is available in the market. Please go to the person who is a civil engineer who is a consultant and not the quake or the illiterate contractor. Here I like to emphasize that please go to the person who prescribes the full medicine and who is not dependent on the manufacturer of the construction chemicals. Nowadays there is a fashion to write in the specifications that use chemicals as per manufacturer specifications and we feel you should not go to such persons. Just imagine doctor saying that you purchase so and so medicine either from RANBAXY or BLUE-CROSS or CIPLA or ZANDU or HIMALAYA and take it as per the manufacturer’s specification. I like to ask that who has seen the structure the manufacturer or the consultant. So it is the duty of the consultant to specify the right medicine and at what dosage and where to use it. Ø One should not forget the fundamental rule and that is same for the both structure as well as Human-being that they both are going to die. Repairs can be compared as a medicine which human being takes to prolong the life. Ø In both the cases age is the main factor for deterioration. Ø Underline principle of CORROSION is applicable to both i.e. for the structure and for the Human-being. Corrosion is the processes of transforming the TRANSFORMED MATERIAL to its ORIGINAL STATE, under the INFLUNCE of the ENVIRONMENT. Ø As the medicine varies from doctor to doctor, repair techniques also vary from repair consultant to repair consultant. Ø There is no mathematical solution for repairs. Everything depends on the environment. Same is the case with the human-being as there is no the medicine for the particular disease. It will vary from persons to person’s response for that particular medicine. Ø Different repair techniques are available in the market, as different medicines are available i.e. Allopathic, Homeopathy, Aryurvedic. Ø Lot of construction chemicals is available in the market. Use only chemicals prescribe by the repair specialist as we take only the medicines prescribe by the doctor. Ø For repairing there is no prescribe rule. Only one rule is attacking the area, which is severely damaged. And after repair go for waterproofing and painting, which are like the clothes to the Human-body. Ø As the building grows old repairs is unavoidable. Sooner or later one has to go for repairs. As the person grows old he has to take one or the other medicine to live the life bit-more. Ø Corrosion of steel in the building is like a blood cancer. Blood transfusion is the best way to cure the blood cancer and after that taking continues precaution is the remedy. Similarly replacing the corroded bars with the new one is the best method for attacking the corrosion and giving the treatment to the bars so further corrosion will not occur. Ø Building like a human-body tries to leave longer. Collapse is the ultimate stage for the structure. Ø Municipality should not insist on taking permission before repairs. As one does not take permission from municipality to go the doctor for getting himself cured or operated. Ø One cannot advise the patient on the telephone that which medicine he has to take in a similar way one cannot advise on repair from the house without seeing the building or structure. Ø It depends on the doctor to doctor whether detail investigation is required or not. Similar it will depend on the consultant to consultant whether we should go for NDT or not. Ø As doctor uses visual inspection and stethoscope to examine and start with the medicine. Similarly the consultant uses visual judgment and simple hammer test for arriving at the methodology of the repairs to be carried out. Ø As soon as one experience the cut on the body one goes to the doctor for the treatment, so that septic is not caused in our body. Similarly as one sees the crack in the column or slab or beam he should go to the repair consultant and not wait for the corrosion to start. Again we repeat here is the chance for the civil engineer to become good doctor by treating building as human being. We are sure by doing so your methodology will improve and change and it will change for good. As this will help society at large. These all are our feelings about the repairs that may vary for you.
